Reading Riot!

We are joining in with a new initiative called Reading Riot! run by Cumbria Libraries this autumn.  Reading Riot! aims to inspire students to read for pleasure by highlighting the best young adult fiction for them to explore and giving them the opportunity to win a book bundle worth £200.  The books in the Reading Riot! suggestions fall into five themes so students can choose a theme that they like, or perhaps one they have never tried before.  The five themes are:

  • Dreams and aspirations
  • Love and relationships
  • My world, your world
  • Unique minds
  • Gender and identity.

Cumbria Libraries New Young Adult Reading Challenge.

Books from the themes are in our school library in a special section.  There are activities based around the books and the initiative to stimulate interest and motivate students to read more – students can:

  • play a ‘recognise the cover’ quiz
  • design their own book cover for their favourite book, or even a book that doesn’t exist (maybe it will inspire them or someone else to write it!)
  • write a book review to share with other Dallam students to help them to choose their next book
  • play the reading bingo sheet (see image above).

To be in with a chance to win the £200 book bundle, students need to record the books they’ve read from the bingo sheet.  They can increase their chance to win by completing any of the other three activities too.  Entries should be returned to Miss Brown in the library.  All entries will receive a Dallam small prize.  Visit the school library to pick up entry forms and activities.

Reading Riot! runs until 3 Jan 2022. Please encourage your child to take part, there is a huge selection to choose from and it may open up a world they have never dreamed of.

Bookbuzz

Bookbuzz is another reading initiative that Dallam is involved with to encourage our students’ love of reading.  It is run by Booktrust, the UKs largest reading charity.  Librarians from across the UK chose the best children’s books published in 2020-2021.  Before half term our students in Year 7 all got the chance to choose a free book from the 17 books in the Bookbuzz range.  They will all get their chosen book just before we break up for Christmas.  Until then, we have all the books in our library in a special Bookbuzz section so they can borrow the ones they didn’t get to choose.  These are the best books chosen by librarians – please encourage your child to see how many of these great books they can read.
